Auditions are held from 6-10PM on Monday and Tuesday of the second week of classes each semester in the CFA basement practice rooms (855 Commonwealth Ave). When you arrive, OBoard members will check you in and guide you to the audition room when it’s your time. Auditions take place in front of the creative teams for both of the season’s mainstage productions at the same time, so you only need to audition once, whether you are auditioning for just one or both shows in a given semester. A DEI Committee representative will also be present in the audition room to ensure an equitable, inclusive, and respectful casting process.
Prior to your audition, you are required to fill out the audition form for each show you are auditioning for. (If you are auditioning for both shows, please fill out both forms.) The deadline to fill out these forms is anytime before you audition, preferably before you arrive to the auditions.
For the audition, please prepare 16-32 bars or roughly 1 minute of a (preferably) musical theater song that you think best showcases your talents. Since the auditions for both shows are held at the same time, please don’t worry about matching the style of a certain show. We just want you to choose a piece you love! Auditions are typically a cappella, meaning that we will not provide accompaniment for the auditions, but if you want to bring an instrumental track to use, you’re welcome to! We just request that you please pull up your track and make sure that the track is aligned to your audition cut before stepping into the audition room, for time’s sake.
If you are auditioning for a show that has a dance call, after your singing audition, you will be pulled to the dance room to learn and a short section of choreography with a small group of fellow auditioners. This will serve as your dance audition, so no need to prepare anything beforehand. Although our dance calls do not tend to be to strenuous (we promise it’s super chill and fun), we do recommend that you wear clothes that you feel comfortable moving and grooving in to the auditions (i.e. clothes that you feel comfortable stretching and/or doing a quick spin in — nothing too constricting, no tripping hazards please, and if you plan on wearing a skirt, we recommend bringing a pair of pants or shorts to wear under).
CALLBACKS will be 6-10PM, that Wednesday and Thursday in the CFA basement practice rooms. If you have been called back, you will receive a callback email late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning detailing what you have been called back for, the callback materials, and when you are called.
Frequently asked questions:
Do I need to be there both audition days? NO - Just pick a time Monday or Tuesday 6-10PM and swing by! (Please leave yourself a little extra time to accommodate other folks who may be auditioning at your preferred time.)
Do I need to come at a specific time? NO - Whenever is best for you works for us, though, we do run on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis, so if you have a time concern, we recommend arriving early, so we can make sure to get you in and out as fast as possible.
Do I need to bring sheet music? NO - We will not have an accompanist at the auditions, so auditions are typically a cappella, unless you would like to bring your own backing track.
Will I have to do a dance audition? YES - If you are auditioning for a show with a dance call, you are required to do the dance audition, but don’t worry. It’s a blast!
If I’m auditioning for both shows do I need to fill out both forms? YES!
What if I have a conflict during callbacks? In the audition forms, you will have an opportunity to inform us of any conflicts during the callback times, and if you have a conflict with a callback you receive, please respond to the callback email detailing the timing of your conflict, and the director(s) will work with you to find a better time.
When will I find out if I’ve been cast? You will receive an email, to which YOU WILL NEED TO RESPOND, late Thursday night/early Friday morning via email.
Can I be cast in multiple mainstage shows? NO - We will ask for your preferences for the shows you auditioned for (across all BU Theater organizations) on the audition form.
Does only auditioning for one show increase my chances of getting into that show? NO, so audition for both!
